On the drive between Blenheim and Kaikoura you pass the Ohau Stream. During autumn and the winter months it becomes the playground for young Fur Seal pups. The stream runs through New Zealand native bush to the sea and the juxtaposition between seals which I associate with the sea and rocky shores, and the lush native greenery is quite surreal.
Each year a new generation of pups return to the stream and spends March through to October playing in it’s pools and rapids.
And, as with many things in New Zealand, tourists can simply walk along the bank of the stream and watch the show that’s being put on – for free.
